It's quite sad that TrackMania 2 is coming to its conclusion :$

EDIT: And since TM2 is pretty much a re-imagination of the first TrackMania, the last environment will most likely be a snow one.

Snow and ice would be cool, but also open blocks, such as the arena blocks!

Honestly, I love the idea of alpine 2, but it gets me thinking-- that's the kind of environment that would REALLY benefit from a weather system, i.e snowfall. If Nadeo were to add stuff like that cross-environment, that would just breath so much new life into the game, because let's be honest.... TM2 is stagnating a tad.

A wheather system could be unfair, unless the mapper can preselect the wheather, e.g. always 60% snow 40% ice, or 100% rain. Otherwise the map records wouldn't be comparable....
BUT IT'S A GREAT IDEA!!!
Imho, the terraforming concept should be completely overlooked. We have outgrown the '90s where linking three blocks to make a map is considered technologically advanced. It should be much more flexible, with a basic mountain/hill shape designer, then you apply the general surface (grass, desert, snow, whatever) and then you start tracing your track and place special blocks and so on.

If somebody ever has played Moto Racer 2 on Playstation, try to remember the editor:

It's very different from the TM editor, BUT I find the idea nice of telling how you would like the shape of your track (including height and jumps/bumps) and then the editor itself created tunnels, bridges and so on.
Imagine combining the TM block concept with something like this, like a wizard for creating a track, and then change it blockwise?

[offtopic]Moto Racers 2... oh boy how much I wanted this game as a child :(
The track editor in particular got me really excited, and also that the game itself looked fantastic.. I never got the game though, I just had a video in my PC with the trailer and I was watching that like 5 times a day, and nowdays it probably doesn't run on Windows 7 or 8. [/offtopic]

You can always either 1.- Run a win98 VM, 2.- Play the PS1 version through an emu. I do number 2. Track editor isn't all that tbh.

That old editor is rubbish, nonetheless, the idea itself was good. A few simple moves and you could get quite nice tracks to race on. ;)

My wish for TM3 editor is to mix the 'block by block' system and the 'draw a track line through a landscape' method.
Basically, any surface (arena, road, dirt) on or near any type of landscape (grass, hill, lake, cliff).
Then you can make tracks like Californian coast roads on the edge of cliffs, carve tracks through mountains like in the Alps etc. etc. etc.

Honestly, if they did that the editor would be worse for me. I love the challenge of being constrained to the grid and trying to invent transitions and make the track flow. Your suggestion would make it too easy.

Yes, I can see your point, however, since there will never be infinite flexibility in the track editor, there will always be room for creativity.
