Lagoon's multiplayer is dead. Or is it?
Lagoon's multiplayer is dead. Or is it? 02 Sep, 2021

No one used this feature in quite some time, wew.

As you probably know, lagoon's multiplayer is essentially dead. You might find two or three players on a random server sometime but it's very rare. There's just two things making the lagoon multiplayer (a bit) active. One of them is the StarLagoon² channel, but the second is something else more fun...

Boring!

About a year ago, a clever mastermind decided - "Hey, lets do a cup in lagoon, because why not?" (note: might be not accurate).

Info spread quickly on some lagoon oriented servers (and more). I was particulary hyped for it, I was still pretty new to Trackmania and I thought of it as some kind of big event. First edition was planned to happen on November 6th 2020.

Once the day came, I quickly rushed on maniaplanet to join the server, but the thing that amazed me, was that there were quite a lot of players - around 38. At first I was surprised, considering I've never seen that many players, not even on stadium.

A lagoon server has more players than a stadium server? Can't be true...

On the server, people in the chat were pretty excited about the cup. Once the map discovery came, everyone found out how good lagoon is for cups. Lots of transitions, fun to drive surfaces and the constant high speed. How can you not like that? The first ManiaExchange Lagoon Cup went very smoothly, and most people loved it!

And thus, ManiaExchange Lagoon Cup let its story begin.

Some people were a bit skeptical about it though. What if it was just an one-off thing, and the next edition doesn't have as many players?
It was a good question, maybe the statement I made [everyone found out how good lagoon is for cups.] was incorrect all along?

So came the second edition. It was a MultiLap map. Most people who played the previous MXLC that time didn't even play the Hypeboys Endurance Cup (which MXLC is actually based on!). I expected this to be the reason for others to pass out on this cup, as I don't think many people like endurance races, and yet, to my suprise, it had about the same amount of players as the previous one.

Somewhere around edition 5, other MXLC players had their maps featured in the cup. A couple of experienced mappers picked up the idea of making competitive lagoon maps, and well, the result was BLOODY AWESOME. I could list my favourite ones, but why don't you check them out yourself?

MX Lagoon Cup Mappack

More players started playing and submitting their own maps, essentially bringing a lot of activity to lagoon. Hell, even I, who's scared to release anything to the public, submitted a couple of maps.

We're gonna skip ahead to edition 19 now. The past editions had a very stable playerbase. Is there something important about this edition or the map? Not really. But that was the time where the MXLC channel was teased, potentially allowing for more players to experience lagoon (or give starlagoon channel players a more competitive environment). It was pretty cool to see a rounds lagoon channel added. I was expecting it to give the actual cup a boost in players, but that didn't really happen. What a bummer.

Beat my times, I dare you (insert reader name here).

I don't really have to say much about the other editions (from the blog topic standpoint). But let's move from the past to the present. As of now (2nd September 2021), the ManiaExchange Lagoon Cup is still going well. Always constant ~20 players every week. It is currently on a World Tour. We're exploring different environments, and we have already done Canyon, Stadium and Valley. One of the maps is even a background on MX! (shameless plug) You can probably see it about 617 pixels to the right.
Or you can look at it below!

Somethings off, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

Our next stop is Desert, in the TM One Speed titlepack. Where we're going we don't need roads brakes. Care to join us?

To end this blog - Did ManiaExchange Lagoon Cup revive lagoon's multiplayer?
And to that my answer is "wait, lagoon had a multiplayer mode before mxlc?"

Thanks for reading, and hopefully I didn't bore you. I'm not very social, so i can't make interesting stuff, yknow...?

Also, I sidetracked from the original blog topic, didn't I?
